Home Base makes custom ceramic tableware for hotels and restaurants. In 2019 the company left a conventional office for a former industrial building in Shanghai’s Xuhui district, and the project gave that building a second life as a working showroom.

The brief had two parts. The space had to hold a growing team day to day, and it had to receive visiting clients in a way they would remember. The building offered room for both: a single industrial volume, eight meters from floor to ceiling, with the height to let the two uses share one space without crowding each other.

The work started from what the building already was. Rather than disguise the industrial shell, the design kept its scale and used it, setting the showroom and the studio inside a space that reads as one place rather than a set of partitioned rooms.
